One of the enrichment activities in our school is called Quest. DS loves it because it involves a lot of science stuff. Last week they learned about gravity. They also learned a cool trick with an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper. I didn't know this when DS hopped into the van that afternoon. This is how the conversation went:
DS: Mama do you bet me that I can make a hole in a piece of paper that you and I can both fit in?
Me: Ummm…no. I'm not going to gamble with you.
DS: Well, do you think I can do it?
Me: That doesn't seem possible. It would have to be a really, really big piece of paper.
DS: No, just a regular piece of paper.
Me: Well, no. I jus don't think that's possible.
DS: Are you underestimating me?
Me: Well, not exactly. I'm just not sure it's possible. And where did you learn 'underestimating'?
(Remember my degree is English not Science or Math- I just couldn't figure out how it could be done.)
DS: Star Wars. "You underestimate the power of the dark side." (in a perfect Darth Vader imitation.)
And of course I'm trying not to burst into a fit of laughter while driving down the road.
And you know what? He did make a hole in a regular size piece of paper that he and I both fit through.
And yes, I had to eat my words and apologize for 'underestimating' him.
