After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. – 1 Kings 19:12
God is not always going to speak to us through a burning bush. He wants us to know his voice in even the gentlest whisper.
Our world is filled with burning bushes and storms. The distractions of life creating a false sense of urgency begging for our time. Crowding out that quiet voice we need to hear. How will we know it is his voice from a burning bush if we don't know it in the quietest of moments?
Be still, and know that I am God. – Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
I've learned I have to take the time, ignore all the distractions and still myself and my mind. It takes self discipline. It takes pushing aside all the tugging from life around me. It takes getting up early before the house awakes or staying up late when I'd rather go to sleep. But it is in this being still I begin to hear His whisper. His ever so gentle voice calming the storms in me.
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. – Mark 4:39 (KJV)
It is in this being still that I know. I know that He is my God.
