Little did I realize Friday afternoon when I decided we would go down to a new little market with a cafe for dinner that I would have an experience that would scream blog worthy. I'm deeming it small town life, but I guess it could happen in any size town.
My mother came down Friday afternoon. My parents live a little over an hour and a half away and my dad who is in the national guard had a 3-day drill this weekend so I talked my mother into coming down to see DS's first basketball game of the season. After substituting all day I couldn't wrap my brain around anything to cook for dinner. At least not anything that didn't require DH standing out in the below freezing weather grilling. He's braved a lot of weather for the sake of grilling, but I had a feeling he would downright refuse Friday night.
So we decided to go down to this new little place. It's about 15 minutes away. It's a great little market with a cafe. They carry a lot of organic items, fresh fish and wonderful breads they bake each day. And the cafe has a great little menu. There's only a small little dining room off of the cafe side of the market. It probably holds about 12-15 tables that would seat 4. I had called earlier in the afternoon to see what time they closed because I was pretty sure it was relatively early (7 p.m.). They didn't mention that there was a wine tasting that evening when I called.
We get there and order our food. When we walk into the dining area there are no tables available. (At this point you should remember that the temperature outside is 30 degrees. 2 degrees below freezing.) As I'm mentioning to DH that we might need to go back and get our order to go the young man who took our order is walking by, hears me and says "you can sit at the tables outside."
Are you as dumbfounded as I was? Seriously? Sit outside to eat when the thermometer is reading 30 degrees?
I looked at him with this look of disbelief and say "It's 30 degrees outside!" To which he replies with a shrug of his shoulders, "I'm sorry." He finally realizes that there is a table they are using for a cheese tray for the cheese and wine tasting and clears it off for us.
Now this little experience didn't upset me or frustrate with their customer service (although the young man did have a bit of an attitude). So far the 3 times I've been in there the service has been outstanding. And the food at the cafe is wonderful. It was just one of those experiences that had me baffled. Baffled as to why anyone would suggest eating in an outdoor eating area when it's literally freezing outside.
